What is Gender Dysphoria

Some people never feel the need to examine or question the gender they were assigned at birth. But for many people, the gender they were assigned at birth doesn't match how they feel on the inside. Gender dysphoria refers to that 'misalignment' between the gender a person feels or identifies as, and the one assigned to them at birth. So the goal of many 'gender affirming' products - such as packers or packing underwear, chest binders or tucking underwear - is to alleviate that gender dysphoria.

What Does Gender Dysphoria Feel Like?

Gender dysphoria can feel different for different people. For some, it shows up as discomfort with specific parts of the body — the chest, hips, voice, or facial features. For others it’s more about social situations: being referred to by the wrong pronouns or name, or feeling like your appearance doesn’t match who you are.

It can range from mild background discomfort to intense distress that significantly affects daily life. Both experiences are valid. Gender dysphoria doesn’t look the same for everyone, and you don’t need to experience it a certain way to have your gender identity recognised.

Is Gender Dysphoria a Mental Illness?

No. Gender dysphoria is not a mental illness. The distress that comes with gender dysphoria is a response to a mismatch between identity and body or social experience — not a disorder of identity itself.

Major medical organisations including the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association recognise this, and support gender-affirming care as an effective and evidence-based approach to relieving gender dysphoria.

How Can Gender-Affirming Products Help?

For many trans and non-binary people, gender-affirming products can significantly reduce gender dysphoria by helping your body feel more aligned with your gender identity. This might include:

Chest binders — to flatten the chest and create a more masc silhouette

Packers and packing underwear — to create the appearance of a bulge

Gender-affirming swimwear — to feel comfortable at the pool or beach

Clothing designed for trans body shapes — for everyday comfort and confidence

These products won’t work for everyone in the same way, and they’re not a replacement for professional support — but for many people they make a meaningful difference to everyday wellbeing.

Getting Support

If gender dysphoria is significantly affecting your mental health, it’s worth speaking with a healthcare provider who has experience with trans and gender diverse people. In the US, LGBTQ+-affirming therapists and gender clinics can provide support, and organisations like the Trevor Project (thetrevorproject.org) offer free, confidential support for young LGBTQ+ people.
